Dewayne Matthews
is Vice President for State Services of the Education Commission of the States.
From 1993 until 2001, he was
Senior Program Director at the Western Interstate
Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) in Boulder, Colorado.
Matthews began his career in education as a first grade teacher
in rural northern New Mexico, and later administered a facility for
neglected and abused children. After working as an education policy analyst
with the New Mexico Legislature, he joined the staff of the New Mexico
Commission on Higher Education and became its Executive Director in 1985.
While in New Mexico, Matthews was a Commissioner to both the Education
Commission of the States and WICHE, and an officer in the State Higher
Education Executive Officers' national organization.
Matthews holds a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from
Arizona State University. He has spoken and written on state higher
education policy and finance, internationalization of education, and the
impact of technology on educational systems. He has worked with governments
and universities throughout the United States as well as Mexico, Canada, and
Japan.
