Richard C. Richardson Jr. is professor of Higher Education at New York University and professor emeritus of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Arizona State University. His current work focuses on the relationships between government and higher education as these influence system performance in the U.S. and in other nations. Previous work focused on systemic change in state higher education systems, quality and diversity issues in U.S. higher education and South Africa, and on statewide coordination and accountability. Before coming to Arizona State in 1977 as chair of the Department of Higher and Adult Education, Richardson served for ten years as the founding president of a Northhampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He also served as dean of students and dean of instruction in the Junior College District of St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri; and as a faculty member and counselor in a private two-year college for women in Vermont. From 1954-57, he served on active duty as a commissioned officer in The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
Richardson is the author or co-author of six books, including: Designing State Higher Education Systems for a New Century (1998) , Achieving Quality and Diversity: Universities in a Multicultural Society (1991), Fostering Minority Access and Achievement in Higher Education (1987), Literacy in the Open Access College (1983), Governance for the Two-Year College (1973) and The Two-Year College: A Social Synthesis (1965). He has also written well over a hundred journal articles and monographs.
He received his B.S. from Castleton State, his M.A. from Michigan State, and the Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1983, Richardson was named a Distinguished Graduate of the College of Education at UT. He also holds an honorary doctor of letters degree from Lafayette College.
