Author Guidelines

EPAA/AAPE recommends that the main text of articles is formatted with standard 1" margins and 12 point (preferably Garamond) font and does not exceed 40 pages, although there may be exceptions. Papers that fall within this broad guideline are more likely to be reviewed, edited, and published faster.


Article abstracts (of no more than 200 words and in active voice) should clearly describe the topic, methods, and main findings. Methods sections should be clearly organized and include all necessary information within their appropriate sections (e.g., data collection and analytical methods). Discussion, implications, and /or conclusion sections should be specific to education policy. Figures and tables should be keyed and inserted directly within the text, where appropriate. EPAA/AAPE recommends authors use appendices to present important supplemental material, including instruments and measurements, as necessary.


EPAA/AAPE requests that authors follow the guidelines for manuscripts in the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). Articles should also be written in the active voice, clearly organized (per APA), and with proper citations and reference list (per APA). The entire manuscript must be stripped of the authors' identifying information (including removing any identifying information from the "Properties" function in Word - see File menu), and only when necessary should references to authors' work be cited (anonymously, and with "authors(s)" and year in the text and reference sections). The manuscript should also contain no numbered or bulleted paragraphs. See the journal's style sheet (PDF) and submission preparation checklist below for more information. 


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. Authorship is clear and submission is reviewable:

    ◦ The manuscript is entirely the work of the authors.
    ◦ Any necessary permissions for extensive excerpts have been acquired prior to submission.
    ◦ The submission is not under consideration by another journal, nor has it been previously published (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
    ◦ The submission is an empirical article or commentary (approximately 2,000 words) on the topic of education policy and has direct implications for education policy.


  2. The manuscript itself is properly prepared:

    ◦ The submission is in a single file, in  Microsoft Word, RTF, WordPerfect, or PDF format.
    ◦ The entire file is blinded, with author names and all identifying information removed. If an author is cited, "Author. (year)." are used in the text and references. Acknowledgements and information embedded in the automatic functions of word processing programs (e.g., authors' names in "properties") must be removed, and the file should not contain any comments or track changes.
    ◦ The text adheres to the manuscript guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 6th edition, or the first author understands that the manuscript must conform with APA style prior to publication.
    ◦ The manuscript has no numbered or bulleted paragraphs.


  3. The authors understand the professional obligations of a manuscript submission:

    ◦ If the research for a manuscript involved human participants, the manuscript's authors are compliant with the applicable legal obligations for their countries, including the approval of institutional review boards (IRB). IRB approval should be indicated in the methods section, or elsewhere (e. g., a footnote), as appropriate. Authors understand their professional obligation to maintain notes and data sets for a minimum of 3 years after publication.
    ◦ The first author of the manuscript also agrees to participate as a reviewer for EPAA/AAPE if the manuscript is accepted. Generally, the expectation is that the first author will review one manuscript between acceptance and publication and another manuscript within a year of acceptance.


  4. The following information is on hand before starting the submission process:

    ◦ The first and last name, affiliation, and e-mail address of each author.
    ◦ The title of the paper and an abstract that is under 200 words.
    ◦ A list of appropriate keywords, including geospatial coverage, time period, sample characteristics, methods/approach, and subject classification (see the ERIC Thesaurus for subject classifications in education).


  5. The prose is written in readable, professional American English (unless the submission is Spanish or Portuguese language) and has been appropriately proofread. Authors should use active voice. Before submitting manuscripts to this journal, non-native speakers of English should consider using a copyediting service that specializes in academic journal preparation assistance for non-English-speaking writers.


  6. EPAA/AAPE does not charge author fees to publish. In order to keep the journal open access, without charging fees to users or authors, we ask authors to assist in the formatting of their articles. This assistance includes (1) inserting the final, accepted version in the journal template, according to the EPAA/AAPE style guide, and (2) conducting a final proofreading of the article 1-2 weeks prior to publication. Lack of assistance on the part of the author/s will cause a delay in publication.
