Rethinking the relationship between education and the work world from a gender perspective: Considerations based on a longitudinal study in Greater Buenos Aires

Abstract

There is a strong tradition of studies on education and work in Latin America, with extensive, rich concepts and empirical work. They comprise broad consensus pointing out that the shift from education to the work world is becoming more and more different, separated and extended, making up transition processes widely uneven. Production is large and can be found in several countries of the region, but it has barely moved to tighten the education-work relation from a gender perspective and has overlooked the research on the relationship between education and reproductive work. This article addresses the analysis of findings from a follow-up study carried out on graduates within the framework of the Grammar of Youth Longitudinal Studies Program, in FLACSO Argentina. It shows the results of retrospective interviews to young women that have rebuild the full transition road from high school to the work world or the care sector. Their conclusions propose integrating the gender perspective into studies on transition to adulthood by including the care sector in order to provide analytical elements for creating protection systems and social justice.
