The study analyses the career conditions and remuneration of teachers in Brazil and Chile, highlighting perceptions of purchasing power and the need for supplementary income. Data were collected through discussion groups with 198 teachers from different Brazilian states and the Maule Region in Chile. The results show that many educators seek extra activities to improve their financial situation, reflecting dissatisfaction with salaries and the difficulty of surviving solely on teaching remuneration. The study also discusses the influence of the state on educational policies and professional recognition, highlighting the importance of improvements in working conditions and remuneration for teachers’ quality of life.
